New Account Setup - What you need
A 529 account may be established by an individual, certain legal entities, a custodian under a State’s UGMA or UTMA statute, or the trustee of a trust. The account’s Purchaser must be at least 18 years of age and be a United States (U.S.) citizen, resident alien, or legal entity with a valid Social Security number or a taxpayer identification number. The account’s Purchaser must also have a valid, permanent address in the U.S. (not a P.O. Box). There are no income limitations for the account’s Purchaser to participate in, or benefit from, a 529 account. There are no restrictions on state of residence to open an account. There may be only one account Purchaser per account.
To establish a 529 account with a trust, State, local government, or a tax-exempt organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Code as account Purchaser, please complete and submit a paper TNStarsCollege Savings 529 Program Application.

– The Purchaser, also known as the Account Owner, is the person who opens the 529 account. The Purchaser controls the 529 account, names the Beneficiary, requests the withdrawals, etc. The Purchaser may be an individual, association, corporation, trust, or other organized entity. Only one (1) individual, association, corporation, trust, or other organized entity may be named as the Purchaser. You will need the Account Owner’s address, phone number, email address, Social Security number, and date of birth.
– The beneficiary is the one individual who will benefit from this 529 account (i.e., the individual who is or will be attending college). The beneficiary must be alive, but there is no age limit for him/her. You will need the beneficiary's address, Social Security number, and date of birth.
Purchaser Appointee Information
– The purchaser appointee is the person designated to exercise your rights as the Purchaser under the Participation Agreement, if you, the Purchaser, dies or becomes legally incompetent. The purchaser's appointee must be at least 18 years old and may be anyone including the listed beneficiary. You will need the purchaser appointee's address, phone number, e-mail address, Social Security number, and date of birth.
– A minimum contribution of $25per investment option selected is required to open a TN Stars 529 account. If you plan to transfer the initial or on-going contributions from your checking or savings account, you will need the type of account, name of the financial institution, the institution's routing number, and your account number to do so. You can find this information on your check.
